In common with many villages in West Sussex, Southwater has changed significantly since the closure of the railway in 1964 and the building of the new by-pass. A great housing development in the 1990's has turned a small railway village into a large vibrant community with an ever increasing population. Its close proximity to the town of Horsham, only two miles away, gives residents the best of both worlds. A village community and all the facilities that can be found in Horsham with a large shopping centre, swimming pool, second schools and rail links to London and the south coast. Southwater itself has an infant school, two junior schools, a thriving parish church and a leisure centre. It also has a unique legacy from times gone by – Southwater Country Park is in the centre of the Village and offers wonderful outdoor leisure opportiunies for everyone. The two lakes in the park are on the site of the old brickworks which closed many years ago – the lakes offer the opportunity to baot, canoe, fish or just watch the wildlife. The park is crossed by the Downs Link which is the footpath that links the North and South Downs this section of the footpath runs along the railway line that used to link Brighton and Horsham and was an important service for the villagers of Southwater. It closed in 1964 . Details of the clubs, societies and facilities can be found in the SOUTHWATER VILLAGE DIRECTORY which is published in April each year and delivered to all the homes and businesses in the Village.
The publication of the Directory is made entirely possible by local trades and services that advertise in the Directory. A complete listing of these services can be found on the trade listings page on this web site. |
